3 Ways To Add Character To Your Home

1. Enhance your fireplace mantel

A fireplace is a natural focal point in any room, consider giving your fireplace and mantel an update for maximum impact!  Add shiplap, stone, or painted brick from hearth to mantel to ceiling.  For your mantel piece explore salvage shops like Brooklyn Restoration Supply in Brooklyn, CT, for a vintage and intricate mantel, a large reclaimed piece of wood, or have a custom concrete piece made.  Your fireplace surround is a great opportunity to explore tile, granite or stone.

2. Upgrade the trim in your home

Trim is like a secret ingredient in a recipe, you don’t know exactly what it is but you have a feeling that it’s what makes the recipe so tasty.  Trim is something that is often overlooked but can make a significant impact in your space.  Trim offers architectural interest and brings it all together.  For example, our own home, a 1854 farm house has beautiful original floor to ceiling windows, these windows are framed with bold historic custom trim.  Anything less than would make these windows look out of place.  Work with your carpenter to find the best trim for your budget, taste and period of your home.

3. Add a tile backsplash with personality to your kitchen

Not ready for a full kitchen remodel but craving a change? Think about adding a more modern and interesting backsplash, a small project that won’t go unnoticed by friends and family next time they stop by.  Try something ultra modern, an updated classic, bold colors or patterns.  We like Floor Source in Auburn, MA, they are very helpful with a wide range of interesting choices.
