Many contractors advertise that they are licensed, but what does that really mean?  Here’s the scoop.

Licensed general contractor or carpenter:

When a contractor says that they are licensed in Massachusetts what they are referring to is that they hold a Construction Supervisor Licence, also known as CSL.  The requirements to receive this license include a minimum of 3 years of experience and passing the licensing exam.

For the exam you must have a strong knowledge of the Commonwealth’s Building Code and other general construction practices.  These code books are no joke, they are thousands of pages!  Once the test has been passed you submit your application and pay a fee of $150. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts Division of Occupational Licensure, Office of Public Safety & Inspections oversees this process.

Once a license is received it must be renewed every 2 years.  To be eligible for a renewed license you must complete continuing education courses and pay a $100 fee.  These courses are a minimum of 12 hours and cover the following topics: code review (largest section), workplace safety, business practices and energy.

Luckily, now these classes are half taken self-paced online and half in person. Ryan loves Mass Nail It, he presents the material well and has one of the best Massachusetts accents of all time, a perk in our book.

So what does this all mean?

When you hire a licensed contractor…
  • They have the most recent building code knowledge
  • Ensure project will pass building inspections
  • Can pull building permits for larger scale projects

Investing in a contractor with a license means you are working with a knowledgeable trade professional! It is most important that you hire a CSL for larger scale home remodeling projects such as kitchen renovations, bathroom renovations, first floor remodels, additions, open walls and any structural projects in your home.

Ryan has held his CSL for 13 years.  In addition to his CSL he also has 2 hoisting engineer licences, CT CSL, and MA HICK.
